Programme 2015/16
Wed 11 March 2015 Annual General Meeting at East Grimstead Reading Room. The hall will be open at 7 pm for payment of subscriptions; the meeting to start at 7.30 pm. Refreshments will be served and you can pick up your 2014 Nature Notes. There will be a slide show on the World of Woodpeckers by Steve Oakes. Non-members wishing to join on the night are very welcome.
Sun 26 April 2015 Spring Drive through the Wood. An opportunity to come into the wood and drive the hard tracks. For the first time, you will be able to drive to the Draining Field. Enter at Livery Gate or Tytherley Road Entrance and come along for refreshments at the Barn. Then drive to the Draining Field (one way signposted route) and exit via Howe Farm Track onto Livery Road. Gates open at 2 pm and close at 4.30 pm.
Sun 10 May 2015 Spring Flower Walk with Salisbury Natural History Society. Friends of Bentley Wood are welcome to join this afternoon walk with John and Pauline Notman. Meet at 1.45 pm at Livery Gate, ready to drive on to the north of the wood at 2 pm. A ramble of about 1.5 miles on paths and tracks, taking about 2 hours.
Sun 10 May 2015 Evening Bird and Bat Walk. Later the same day we have an evening walk to listen to birdsong and owl calls and see and identify bats as evening falls. Experts will be on hand to help. Stout footwear recommended. Light refreshments at the Barn afterwards. Meet at 7 pm at the Barn.
Sat 13 June 2015 Early Summer Wildflower Walk. See and learn about Bentley Wood’s summer flowers with Pat Woodruffe, Anne Appleyard and Sue Fitzpatrick during a gentle stroll of about 2 hours. Meet at Livery Gate at 1.45 pm ready to drive on to the north of the wood at 2 pm.
Sat 18 July 2015 Wildlife Detective Walk in the Draining Field. Enjoy a 3 hour stroll to and around the Draining Field area and pond, with experts on hand to help identify flowers, butterflies, dragonflies, grasshoppers. Meet at Hawksgrove car park on the Howe Farm Track at 9.30am. We’ll walk some of the way to the Draining Field but there will be transport all the way for those that need it. We’ll leave the wood by 1 pm.
Sat 15 August 2015 Summer Walk and BBQ. This one to two hour circular stroll will take us to the Rowley Ponds and be followed by a locally-sourced BBQ! Stout footwear recommended. Meet at the Barn by 4 pm.
Sat 5 September 2015 Wildflower Drive Through and Cream Teas. Another opportunity to come into the wood by car to drive the hard tracks and see the autumn crocus display (if we’re lucky!). Enter at Livery Gate or Tytherley Road Entrance and come along for a delicious cream tea at the Barn. Then drive to the Draining Field (one way signposted route) and exit via Howe Farm Track onto Livery Road. Gates open at 2pm and close at 4.30pm.
Wed 16 September 2015 FOBW Day Trip to Brownsea Island. From Winterslow Village Hall by coach then ferry to see red squirrels, birds and other wildlife. £17.50 pp (plus entry fee for Brownsea Island (£5/free for National Trust members) and Dorset Wildlife Trust Reserve with hides (£2 but optional). Booking essential (57 places). Further details – see below.
Sun 18 October 2015 Fungus Foray. Come and learn to recognise and identify some amazing fungi with Friends of Bentley Wood, Wiltshire Botanical Society and the Salisbury & District Natural History Society. Coordinator Ailsa McKee will divide us into groups with a few people picking then gather us at the end for an identification session. Please wear suitable footwear for rough/muddy terrain. Meet at the Hawksgrove car park on the Howe Farm Track at 10 am. Finished by 1 pm.
Thu 3 December 2015 Friends’ Christmas Party. At East Grimstead Reading Room, starting at 7.30 pm. Good food and wine, good company, entertainment and a raffle. We look forward to welcoming you.
Sat 2 January 2016 Welcome in the New Year Family Walk. Walk off all that Christmas and New Year excess. Bring the whole family. Well-behaved dogs on leads also very welcome. Please wear suitable footwear for rough/muddy terrain. Mulled wine and mince pies. Meet at the Eastern Clearing car park, off Tytherley Road at 10.30 am.
Wed 9 Mar 2016 Annual General Meeting. At East Grimstead Reading Room. The hall will be open at 7 pm for payment of subscriptions and the AGM will start at 7.30 pm. Refreshments will be served and there will be time to circulate, chat, enjoy meeting other Friends over a glass of wine, and pick up your 2015 Nature Notes. There will also be some entertainment! Non-members wishing to join on the night are welcome.
The Trustees have asked us to remind Friends that the picking of flowers or collecting of any specimen from Bentley Wood is not permitted.
